This was an anonymized 2026 superflex keeper auction, not a generic mock. Of 20 keepers, seven were quarterbacks. That left 13 open quarterback starter slots while the remaining player pool still had meaningful depth.
That setup matters more than a national quarterback ranking. The room did not need to buy quarterbacks at the same rate as a new, no-keeper superflex league. Several managers had already solved the problem before the auction opened.
The price cliff

Nine startable superflex quarterbacks sold for $9 or less. The explanation was not that the room suddenly decided quarterback did not matter. It was that enough teams were already covered, enough usable supply remained, and the remaining buyers no longer had the same urgency.
What a static list missed
A public list can tell you that a quarterback is valuable in the abstract. It cannot see the pre-draft keeper board, count the open needs in the room, or update after the managers who still need a starter have bought one.
That is why a single “fair value” is a dangerous way to prepare for a league-specific auction. In this room, the relevant question was not “How good is this quarterback?” It was “How many managers still need one at this moment?”
The portable lesson
- Count needs before you draft. Keepers can change positional demand before the first nomination.
- Watch for the moment demand is covered. A price cliff is possible when a position has more usable supply than active buyers.
- Do not force the lesson onto every league. Fewer QB keepers, different scoring, or a room that remembers last year's bargains can move or erase the cliff.
